Exhibition Practice as a Co-Creative-Intuitive Process: Notes from a Conversation with Yves-Michele Saß, Cofounder of Loggia, about the Exhibition Matchmaker.
Does art have its own social “temperature” and can this serve as a guide for an exhibition program? Yves-Michele Saß, cofounder of Munich’s Loggia alongside Stefan Fuchs, recognizes temperature as a productive concept for both the exhibition program he is responsible for and the current exhibition Matchmaker on view during Various Others 2021.
In partnership with the Brussels art space Damien & The Love Guru, Loggia presents a group exhibition that combines diverse media such as painting, video, and sculpture (selected by Priya Shetty and curated by Christiane Blattmann and Stefan Fuchs) and in which the ostensible absence of a thematic-narrative framework becomes the show’s (warm) potential. Intuition, playful experimentation, and social emergence assume those positions in the exhibition where, in other cases or circumstances, intellectual references are attempted and established. Temperature—in the form of positive social energy—consciously replaces a prevailing global mindset of modern rationality. Indeed, Saß deliberately chooses the terms counter-thematic and counter-narrative in order to break away from the rigid settings of art, free up space, and explore alternative paths with the program.
Here, he makes reference to the term “hippie modernism,” originally coined by Laura Amann (Curator, Kunsthalle Wien), that emphasizes the collective, from whose harmonious cooperation good exhibitions can emerge in the first place. He notes, “We like the idea of perceiving oneself as a fractal of infinite consciousness.” For those interested in learning more about loggias and the exhibition approach resulting from the partnership with Damien & The Love Guru, a visit to Matchmaker is highly recommended.
