Galerie Nagel Draxler is pleased to cooperate with Night Gallery, one of Los Angeles’ leading platforms for emerging artists founded by Davida Nemeroff in 2010. On view are works by the German painter Hans-Jörg Mayer and multimedia artist Khari Johnson-Ricks.

Mayer paints zombies that resemble models, human-animal beings, or cyborg women with techno prostheses. His repertoire leans heavily on the aesthetic eccentricity of the 1980s, during which his artistic career began, but also touches on the early feminist and artistic worlds of Sci-Fi literature from the 1920s and 1950s. Johnson-Ricks’ artistic practice extends across a wide range of media, including painting, performance, and mural making. Exploring the illusory potential of paper, his work makes use of the medium’s graphic flatness to create two forms of depth: one in real space, with cut-out shapes layered sculpturally, and one in the fictive pictorial space conjured from these assemblages.
