Michaela Eichwald
09.03.2021 – 12.09.2021
How to trick painting with its own devices? That is one of the more vexing questions in art. The Rhineland of the 1980s and 1990s, where Michaela Eichwald studied and began working as an artist, is the stomping ground of a generation of artists who addressed this question head-on. They formulated the artistic subject as a comical figure whose pathetic failure—in light of art history and the commodification of contemporary art production—was brought into play in a self-ironic and very visible way. While Eichwald in no way dismisses the art of these peers, in her work no self-referential artist ego appears nor is the compromised role of painting in highly commercialized times negotiated at the pictorial level.
