Lee Mingwei: 禮 Li, Gifts and Rituals
27.05.2021 – 12.09.2021

The Museum Villa Stuck is featuring the work of Lee Mingwei (*1964), a Taiwan-born artist who lives and works in Paris and New York. This is the first exhibition of his work in Munich. On view are
installations and performances spanning the past thirty years that center on the rituals of giving and receiving gifts and place great emphasis on the active involvement of the audience.

Lee Mingwei presents art as an immaterial and transformative gift. By offering songs, discussions, and contemplative moments, he encourages visitors to interact and participate. In this way, his artistic practice also opens up possibilities for processing and coming to terms with the social consequences of the pandemic.

Lee Mingwei: 禮 Li, Gifts and Rituals celebrates the gifts of time and dedication. One of the artist’s most important influences is the Confucian principle of li (禮), an abstract concept encompassing rites, rituals, gifts, and rules of propriety. Drawing on it, the exhibition examines gestures of hospitality and rituals of giving and taking.

Schubert Evening with Julian Prégardien and Lee Mingwei
7pm

Talk, Musical Introduction, Reading, and Concert

Tenor Julian Prégardien speaks with visual artist Lee Mingwei about the moving power of Franz Schubert’s songs, the translation of romantic poetry into music, music’s extraordinary ability to comfort, and the musical basis of this emotional effect. The discussion is based on Lee Mingwei’s performance piece Sonic Blossom in the Villa Stuck, during which Schubert songs are sung by opera singers on a daily basis in Franz von Stuck’s music room. Afterwards, Prégardien reads from Kurt David’s Der Spielmann vom Himmelpfortgrund and concludes the evening with a concert.

Julian Prégardien is an internationally acclaimed tenor. In addition to his concert performances, he also teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.
